Not sure how to choose the best diesel engine oil? Look here!

Figuring out which oil is the best for diesel engines is a tricky matter. Many  drivers  believe that there are no differences between the oils available on the market. But that's not true. Not all oil guarantees adequate engine protection and performance expected by those who drive. View here for more info: 5w20 vs 0w20

But then what is the best oil for diesel engines ? What can one brand provide that others cannot? Thinking to clarify these issues, we decided to gather in this post everything you should consider when choosing a diesel engine oil . That way, you'll know the ideal oil for your truck's engine. Follow the reading!

What is the role of diesel engine oil?

Unlike what many drivers imagine, a good lubricating oil is not just for lubricating the engine's moving parts — pistons and connecting rods, for example.

It is also responsible for cooling the hottest components, minimizing the formation of sludge and  wear on the components , protecting the metal against corrosion and sealing the engine against the passage of gases that come from combustion, ensuring high performance and prolonging service life of the engine .

What to consider when choosing a diesel engine oil?

As you may have noticed, lubricating oil is essential for the proper functioning of the vehicle . Therefore, it is very important to be aware. See what to take into account to make the right choice!

Check the oil composition

A good lubricating oil must have some additives in its composition in order to ensure maximum performance. See what they are and what they are for!

  • antioxidants : work together with oxygen and are responsible for preventing metal oxidation;
  • anticorrosives : reduce the development of acidic substances.
  • detergents : have the function of reducing the accumulation of deposits and plaques;
  • defoamers : act on the thickness of the foam bubbles, eliminating them;
  • anti-wear : they are responsible for forming a protective layer for metallic surfaces;
  • Viscosity improvers : are responsible for decreasing the oil's sensitivity to temperature changes.

Pay attention to the specifications

The perfect oil for your engine is one that meets 3 specifications. Do you know what they are? Follow up!

  1. Specification of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

The SAE is known as the viscosity specification - a property which varies with temperature. It is very important because it determines the oil's resistance to flow.

  1. American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification

The API  classifies the level of lubricant performance and is based on the degree of rigidity of the conditions of existing jobs. It is divided into two categories: S engine oils (engines that run on gasoline and alcohol) and C engine oils  (engines that run on diesel ).

In addition, there is a second letter that, in alphabetical order, joins the " S " or " C " and indicates the types of services that the engine is capable of performing.

  1. Factory Specifications

In the vehicle assembler's instruction manual , there are important norms and standards about heavy vehicles and the products recommended for each one.

If you've never had a look at the material, we believe it's a good idea to look it up and consider it before choosing the right oil for your truck . Automakers carry out tests frequently and, depending on the results they obtain, indicate the lubricant with the best performance for the engines .
